ABSTRACT
A herpetofauna identification training was conducted at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Papua, aimed at enhancing students' skills in species recognition, morphological understanding, and scientific specimen preservation. The activity served as an implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) curriculum, which emphasizes experiential learning. The four-day training involved 17 students from the Diploma (D3) Conservation and Undergraduate (S1) Forestry programs. The methods included lectures, laboratory specimen observation, field exploration, morphological identification, and preservation using 70% alcohol. The results showed that participants successfully identified approximately 20 herpetofauna species from over 50 collected and preserved samples. Evaluation revealed high satisfaction levels: 80% of students were very satisfied with the training materials, 85% with the instructional methods, and 75% with the available facilities. This training not only improved practical competencies but also produced curated specimens that now serve as active learning materials in forest ecology and wildlife conservation courses. The initiative serves as a replicable model for field and laboratory-based capacity building in biodiversity conservation, particularly in eastern Indonesia.
