ABSTRACT
Biosecurity is an important measure to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases in smallholder livestock farming. However, farmers’ knowledge of biosecurity remains relatively low, resulting in suboptimal implementation of disease prevention practices. This community service program aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and understanding of biosecurity practices for ruminant livestock in Leuhan Village, West Aceh Regency. The activity was conducted on July 24, 2026, involving 20 buffalo farmers through a participatory educational approach consisting of lectures, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and the distribution of biosecurity leaflets. Evaluation was conducted using 10 questions covering seven knowledge indicators, namely basic biosecurity concepts, barn sanitation, management of sick animals, traffic control, sources of disease transmission, benefits of biosecurity, and biosecurity implementation in smallholder livestock farming. The results showed an increase in all knowledge indicators. Knowledge of basic biosecurity concepts increased from 45% to 90%, barn sanitation from 30% to 95%, management of sick animals from 50% to 100%, traffic control from 40% to 90%, sources of disease transmission from 35% to 95%, benefits of biosecurity from 55% to 100%, and biosecurity implementation from 38% to 90%. These results indicate that biosecurity education can improve farmers’ knowledge of disease prevention practices. The activity is expected to provide a foundation for better biosecurity implementation to support livestock health and the sustainability of smallholder livestock farming.
