https://journal.fapetunipa.ac.id/index.php/igkojei/article/view/621

ABSTRACT

Plant pests and diseases threaten horticultural production in Kwau, where farmers often rely on synthetic pesticides without adequate understanding of safe use, human and environmental risks, or pesticide resistance. This community engagement introduced plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a biological approach to plant pest organisms, using local materials to lower cost and reduce travel to Manokwari for chemical purchases. Sessions at the Kwau village hall and a demonstration in a farmer’s garden delivered plain-language guidance on PGPR concepts, simple production, and safe application. Farmers participated actively and responded enthusiastically, indicating greater awareness of biological control and a practical entry point for using PGPR. Lasting benefits will depend on structured follow-up with farmers and local institutions.

Keywords: Kwau; Mentoring; Organic; Plant disease; Rhizobacteria

ABSTRAK

Hama dan penyakit tanaman mengancam usahatani hortikultura di Kampung Kwau; petani banyak memakai pestisida sintetis tanpa pemahaman memadai tentang pemakaian aman, risiko kesehatan dan lingkungan, serta resistensi. https://journal.fapetunipa.ac.id/index.php/igkojei/article/view/635

ABSTRACT

Small-scale community-based sago processing in West Papua has high potential, but production at the household level remains limited due to manual processing practices. This community service program aimed to strengthen household sago processing capacity in Sidey Makmur Village, Sidey District, Manokwari Regency through the introduction of a semi-mechanical processing system using a cylinder-type rasping machine (variant-02), training, and on-site technical mentoring. Program performance was evaluated through direct observation of partner operation and production outcomes. The intervention reduced processing time to about 15.5 hours per tree (1 tree per 2 days), achieved rasping capacity of 490 kg/hour, and increased fresh sago starch production from 180 kg/week to 524 kg/week. The results indicate that appropriate technology transfer improves production efficiency, supports operational skill development among partners, and opens greater opportunities for local income improvement.

Keywords: community service; Manokwari Regency; sago starch; semi-mechanical processing; technology transfer

ABSTRAK

Pengolahan sagu skala rumah tangga berbasis masyarakat di Papua Barat memiliki potensi besar, namun produktivitasnya masih terbatas karena proses yang dominan manual. https://journal.fapetunipa.ac.id/index.php/igkojei/article/view/620

ABSTRACT

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is an important plantation commodity in Indonesia, including West Papua, but its productivity at smallholder level remains low due to suboptimal crop management, use of low-performing planting materials, and aging trees. This community service program aimed to improve farmers' capacity to rejuvenate old cocoa stands through grafting techniques. The activity was conducted on July 17, 2025, in the cocoa field of a member of the Mujir Aibone farmer group, Ransiki, South Manokwari Regency, and implemented through short lectures, field demonstrations, and supervised hands-on practice of side and top grafting. The results showed high participation and strong enthusiasm among farmers, most of whom had no prior experience with grafting. Follow-up evaluation two weeks after training indicated an average grafting success rate of 80%, suggesting that this technique is feasible and promising for accelerating cocoa rejuvenation and supporting productivity improvement in smallholder plantations.

Keywords: Cocoa; Grafting; Productivity; Rejuvenation; Training

Antonius SuparnoTrisday ParariSaraswati Prabawardani Sutiharni Sutiharni Nouke L. https://journal.fapetunipa.ac.id/index.php/igkojei/article/view/667

ABSTRACT

Adolescence is recognized as a critical developmental phase characterized by rapid biological, psychological, and social changes. Adolescent girls living in orphanages are identified as experiencing multiple vulnerabilities, including limited access to reproductive health services, low nutritional knowledge, elevated levels of stress and anxiety, and restricted social skills. These conditions are considered to require holistic and participatory empowerment interventions. The program was developed as a science- and technology-based empowerment model in which nutrition and reproductive health education, modified yoga practice, peer group strengthening through role-play, and life skills training were integrated. This Community Service Program was conducted over eight months at Aisyiyah Putri Orphanage in Pekajangan, Pekalongan Regency, and involved 20 adolescent girls aged 13–18 years. The intervention was implemented through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), educational sessions, demonstrations, yoga practice delivered by a certified instructor, mentoring activities, and pre–post evaluations using a validated and reliable questionnaire (α = 0.72). Significant improvements in knowledge were observed, with mean scores increasing from 62.5 to 78.4. Reductions in stress levels (20.1 to 14.8) and anxiety (from 18.2 to 12.7), were also recorded, while psychosocial scores were found to improve from 65.7 to 75.2. These findings indicate that a participatory communication approach integrating health education, modified yoga, and peer group activities is effective in strengthening adolescents’ holistic capacities. The program is considered a relevant biopsychosocial empowerment model for orphanage settings and is regarded as having strong potential for sustainability through institutional support and digital-based monitoring systems.

Keywords: Adolescent girls; Biopsychosocial well-being; Health education; Modified yoga; Peer group

Lia D.
